Planning / Design

In 1998 within the framework of the Campus Master Plan, the 1st Architectural Design Competition was organised by the Campus Development Office for the first building project to be constructed on Athalassa site.

The object of this Competition was the planning and design of the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences and the Common Teaching Facilities 01.

Development of the project started immediately after the conclusion of the competition.
Constructive deliberations with the Faculty personnel took place and a two year period was accounted for the finalisation of the design and the preparation of detail drawings.

Construction of the project took place two phases. The first phase entailed the construction of the main volume of the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences and was completed in 2003.

An extension of the Faculty which constitutes part of building FST 02 (see Project Description below) took place in 2009.

Project Description / Uses

The Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences and CTF 01 building complex comprises three main buildings, together composing a single organism.

Building FST 01 in which Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Sciences are housed, building FST 02 where Physics, Chemistry and Biology are housed and building CTF 01 which houses common teaching facilities. The overall complex is mainly organised in three levels plus a basement level and has extensive outdoor communal spaces.

A strong feature of the design approach are the covered but open air circulation corridors of the building which do create a less energy consuming environment but pose questions on the level of achieved control.

Within buildings FST 01 and FST 02, are deanery, research and teaching laboratories, IT labs, academic offices, conference rooms, common rooms, postgraduate students' areas, administrative offices and other support spaces, are accommodated.

These spaces constitute the physical hub were professors and students aim for growth in research, innovation and technology; elements essential to the formulation and development of modern society.

It is noted that when the new building for the Department of Biological Sciences will be materialised, the spaces that are currently occupied by the Department will be at the disposal of other Departments of the Faculty for further growth.
