Experimental Archaeology

After collecting the data (archaeological, topographical, meteorological and written sources) and using the GIS, experimental voyages will take place in selected areas of Cyprus. Experimental sailing voyages will be completed with Kyrenia – Liberty (a replica of the ancient shipwreck) and small boats with lateen sail.
The objectives of the experimental sailing trips are the following: Test the capabilities of square sail in various weather conditions. Test the capabilities of small boats with lateen sail. Compare the capabilities of the two different types of boat. Develop a hypothesis about the duration of the voyages. Test the role of small anchorages, especially in cases that document archaeological material. Test the mooring procedures and navigation techniques.
