Purpose of the program:
 
Primary, secondary and higher education officers in the Natural Sciences need research training. The doctoral program aims to produce researchers in the field of Science Learning, who will combine the required knowledge from the Natural Sciences, Cognitive Psychology and research methodology, in order to produce the data that will support the ongoing upgrading of Science Teaching. The general purpose of the program is the integrated training of researchers in Learning in the Natural Sciences. Participants in the program will acquire basic and applied research skills, develop strategies for evaluation and reform of Educational Policy and acquire critical analysis skills in the field of Learning Natural Sciences and their evolution.
 
 
Expected learning outcomes:
 
With the successful completion of the program, it is expected that students:
* They will have become familiar with the literature of learning in Natural Sciences and modern theories of cognitive development, design and implementation of educational programs in Natural Sciences.
* They will have developed skills of reviewing and critically analyzing the literature on specific research issues.
* They will be able to formulate exploratory questions, determine the level of clarity of questions and choose appropriate methodology for their study.
* Have become familiar with a wide range of qualitative and quantitative methods of Educational Research and have gained experience of applying these methods in the collection and analysis of data and, more generally, in promoting the study of basic and applied questions in Science Learning.
* Will be able to systematically apply the available research data and, taking into account the needs and limitations of the education system, will develop detailed recommendations for educational reforms, with the aim of continuously improving the effectiveness of the learning process in the Natural Sciences.
* They will know how students build basic scientific knowledge, practices and skills, and how all this combined with their abilities and emotional world allows students to effectively deal with problems of everyday life and participate in society as active and scientifically literate citizens.
 
 
Language of instruction and duration of study:
 
The language of the program is Greek.
The minimum duration of study is 6 semesters (3 years) and the maximum duration of study is 16 semesters (8 years).

* PhD candidates who hold a master's degree from any Department of the University of Cyprus or any other recognized University may complete 3-5 courses (36-60 ECTS), after consultation with the program coordinator and the academic advisor of the student. For exempt courses, under Rule 10.3 of the approved postgraduate study Rules, students apply for credits
 
Program Completion
 
To complete the program at PhD level it is required:
* Success in a comprehensive examination
 
* Preparation of a doctoral dissertation and its presentation in an open seminar and its successful defence before a five-member examination committee
