My research interest focus on genetic epidemiological studies (mainly in the field of genetic association studies) in neurological diseases (Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s diseases and multiple sclerosis) and in Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS), where I conducted the first large epidemiological and genetic studies in greek populations. Major achievement in the RLS field include the successful completion of large studies on RLS in uremic patients and the introduction of the first non-pharmacological treatment for RLS in uremic patients.
I am an active member of major international consortia and study groups: Genetic Epidemiology of Parkinson’s disease (GEO-PD), European Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group (EURLSSG) and International Multiple Sclerosis Genetic Consortium (IMSGC). I am also a co-founder and member of the Executive Committee of the: Hellenic Longitudinal Investigation of Aging and Diet (HELIAD) and Hellenic Academy of Neuroimmunology (HELANI).
My research collaborative network includes scientists from almost all Medical Departments in Greece and Cyprus as well as leading research centers and study groups abroad (NIH/ NIA, Columbia NY, Max-Planck Institute Munich, GEO-PD, EURLSSG, EUROMAC). He has received financial support from participation in various research programs (FP7; Greek General Secretariat for research and Technology; Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation; Alzheimer Association USA; PD Foundation, USA).

My research output includes more than >230 PubMed publication with more than 6000 citation (Scopus) and an h-index=40.

Peripheral Neuropathies
Small Fiber Neuropathies
Neuropathic Pain

My current research focuses on the use of various neurophysiological techniques (nerve conduction studies, excitability studies, electromyography, single fiber EMG and transcranial magnetic stimulation) for the diagnosis of Peripheral Nervous System disorders. I am particularly interested in all aspects of polyneuropathies (epidemiologgy, pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, natural history). I am also intetested in peripheral neuropathic pain this is why I got trained in microneurography, a unique technique for the diagnosis of small fiber dysfunction, by Jordi Serra (King's College Hospital, London).

Sleep-Wake Disturbances, Sleep Physiology
Morbus Parkinson and Neurodegenerative Diseases
Deep Brain Stimulation

My research focuses on the neurophysiology of sleep-wake disturbances (including REM Sleep Behavior Disorder, sleepiness and sleepiness perception, fatigue and apathy) in patients with neurodegenerative disorders-mainly in those with Parkinson's disease-as well as in patients with primary sleep-wake disorders. Research methodology includes the use of specific questionnaires, sleep-wake diaries, behavioral tests, wearables (advanced actigraphy) and sleep neurophysiology (polysomnography and special EMG protocols, MSLT, MWT). In parallel, further pursuing research collaboration with the University of Bern, I study the impact of deep brain stimulation (DBS) on sleep-wake functions in patients with Parkinson's disease that undergo DBS surgery.

Stress

My research interests lie in the broad fields of neuroimmunology, cognitive neurology and psychoneuroendocrinology of stress. More specifically, I am interested in the clinical aspects of multiple sclerosis and particularly in those related to cognition and neuroimaging of the disease. With regards to dementias, my interest resides mostly in the prediction of conversion of mild cognitive impairment to clinically definite dementia. Finally, I have been investigating the role of stress management in several both neurological and non-neurological disorders.
