F. Participation of the UNESCO Chair and the Centre for Gender Studies of the UCY in an Online Discussion on Gender Training in Europe, organized by the EuroGender Network (25-26 September 2012)
The European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) organized a two-day online discussion and event on gender training in Europe on the 25th and 26th of September 2012. The UNESCO Chair in Gender Equality and the Centre for Gender Studies of the University of Cyprus were among the participants and were involved in a fruitful discussion and exchange of ideas with other gender experts and scholars from across Europe. The new postgraduate programme for Gender Studies at the University of Cyprus was introduced. Practical and theoretical questions were covered, and concerns and experiences were shared in this constructive and European-wide event.

I. Launch of UN Women, powerful driver of Women's Equality
On February 24, the UN celebrated the launch of UN Women, its newest organization. The event took place in the UN General Assembly Hall in New York. UN Women is formally known as the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, and was created unanimously by UN member-states following advocacy by women's activists. It represents the UN's most ambitious effort to achieve gender equality, and has been heralded by supporters of women's rights around the world. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called UN Women "a powerful new agent for progress on gender equality and women's empowerment". Former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet has been appointed as the first Executive-Director of UN Women. In her speech for the event, Michelle Bachelet described the new organization as the "global champion" for women at the UN. Its purpose is to support individual countries in moving towards gender equality in economics and politics, and ending the worldwide phenomenon of violence against women. It will assist in setting international standards for progress, and lead coordinated UN efforts to make new opportunities for women and girls central to UN programmes for development and peace.

The eighth of March is being celebrated as International Women's Day. This year, the Day marks its one hundred year centenary. It was created in 2011 to celebrate the economic, political and social achievements of women. Its theme for 2011 is equal access to education, training and science and technology: Pathway to decent work for women.

M. 25th November: UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
By resolution 54/134 of the 17th December 1999 the United Nations General Assembly has designated the 25th of November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. This is an anniversary celebrated worldwide every year, and is marked by various activities designated to raise public awareness of the issue. The University of Cyprus Centre for Gender Studies and the UNESCO Chair on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment remain committed to the aim of ending gender violence and all forms of inequality and disempowerment, through multiple types of research, dialogue and positive action. Work to end violence against women and girls, and make the 25th of November an important date in your calendar!
