Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to the website of the International Archaeological Conference entitled "Embodied Identities in the Prehistoric Eastern Mediterranean: Convergence of Theory and Practice".

The Conference will take place on 10-12 April 2012 and is organised under the auspices of the Archaeological Research Unit of the University of Cyprus and co-organised by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

The conference will focus on issues of identity (personal, social, ethnic, gender and religious) as constructed, experienced and performed through the physical body in prehistoric societies. Aspects that will be explored include the physical body as social body, material culture and the body, and the represented body. Furthermore, our intention is to bridge the gap between theoretical approaches and archaeological data, and for this reason we welcome the presentation of new archaeological data and analytical results that have resulted from recent and on-going archaeological projects in the Eastern Mediterranean.

In this respect, we hope to highlight parallel and diverging aspects of cultural and social developments in the broader prehistoric Eastern Mediterranean.

Cyprus, a bridge between the East and the West for centuries, is located in the heart of the East Mediterranean, providing the most appropriate place for such a conference. We look forward to meeting you in Cyprus next April in what promises to be a stimulating and enjoyable event!
