H Δέσπω Φάττα-Κάσινου είναι Καθηγήτρια του Τμήματος Πολιτικών Μηχανικών και Μηχανικών Περιβάλλοντος. Διετέλεσε διευθύντρια του Διεθνούς Ερευνητικού Κέντρου Νερού Νηρέας του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου από την ίδρυσή του και μέχρι το τέλος του 2022. Το 1993 απέκτησε Δίπλωμα Χημικού Μηχανικού από το Εθνικό Μετσόβιο Πολυτεχνείο, το 1995 M.Sc. στη Διαχείριση Περιβάλλοντος από το European Association for Environmental Management and Education και το 1999 Διδακτορικό Δίπλωμα από το Εθνικό Μετσόβιο Πολυτεχνείο. Έχει δημιουργήσει το πρώτο ερευνητικό εργαστήριο (2005) και το πρώτο ερευνητικό κέντρο για το νερό και τα υγρά απόβλητα στην Κύπρο (2011), στο οποίο σήμερα απασχολούνται περισσότεροι από 30 νέοι ερευνητές. Έχει τιμηθεί με το Eθνικό Βραβείο Έρευνας από το Ίδρυμα Προώθησης Έρευνας Κύπρου το 2012 και το 2022 με το βραβείο Noack Laboratorien Outstanding Science Career Award από την SETAC (The Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry). Eίναι Executive Editor του επιστημονικού περιοδικού Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering, και Editor του Water Research, Elsevier. Στην ερευνητική της ομάδα έχουν πραγματοποιήσει την έρευνα τους μέχρι σήμερα, 50 φοιτητές σε επίπεδο Master (MSc/Meng) και Διδακτορικό. Έχει διατελέσει πρόεδρος του Επιστημονικής και Τεχνολογικής Συμβουλευτικής Επιτροπής του Κοινού Προγραμματισμού για το Νερό της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης (2015-2019), ενώ σήμερα προεδρεύει της Συμβουλευτικής Επιστημονικής Επιτροπής του African Center of Excellence in Water and Environment Research (ACEWATER) που εδρεύει στη Νιγηρία. Το 2014 η Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή ενέκρινε χρηματοδότηση 600,000 ευρώ μετά από πρότασή της για το COST-ES1403 και το 2015, 3,7 εκατομμύρια ευρώ για το έργο H2020-ΜSCA-ITN/675530 για δημιουργία νέας γνώσης στις ξενοβιοτικές ουσίες, που είναι το κύριο αντικείμενο της έρευνας της. Έχει μέχρι σήμερα συντονίσει μεγάλο αριθμό ερευνητικών έργων τόσο εθνικών όσο και ευρωπαϊκών με συνολικό προϋπολογισμό πέραν των 13 εκατομμυρίων ευρώ. Έχει 181 δημοσιεύσεις σε επιστημονικά περιοδικά, 204 σε επιστημονικά συνέδρια ενώ έχει συγγράψει διάφορα επιστημονικά βιβλία, κεφάλαια σε βιβλία και εγκυκλοπαίδειες. Έχει πραγματοποιήσει 68 προσκεκλημένες διαλέξεις και ομιλίες σε διάφορες χώρες του κόσμου, και εκπροσωπεί την Κύπρο σε διάφορες επιτροπές στο εξωτερικό. Είναι Highly Cited Researcher για τα έτη 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, και 2022 (Clarivate Analytics), διάκριση που προκύπτει από την απήχηση του έργου της για την τελευταία δεκαετία, (h-index:76, Citations: 26957, Google Scholar). Έχει σημαντική συνεισφορά στην επιμόρφωση του κοινού σε περιβαλλοντικά θέματα μέσω συμμετοχής της σε πολλές βραβευμένες δραστηριότητες σχολείων και διαγωνισμών επιστήμης για νέους. Το 2018 συνέγραψε μαζί με τον Αντώνη Παπαθεοδούλου το παιδικό βιβλίο για το νερό «Το μυστικό βιβλίο του Μπλε Κύκλου» που κυκλοφόρησε από τις Εκδόσεις Παπαδόπουλος σε Ελλάδα και Κύπρο, και στα αγγλικά από τον Εκδοτικό Οίκο του International Water Association (IWA). To βιβλίο απέσπασε το πρώτο βραβείο των Public Awards 2019 στην κατηγορία Ελληνική Παιδική Λογοτεχνία, ενώ αποτέλεσε τη βάση της παιδικής θεατρικής παράστασης «Ταξίδι στον Μπλε Κύκλο» που χρηματοδοτήθηκε από το Ίδρυμα Έρευνας και Καινοτομίας Κύπρου και το Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου.     
 
 
 
Η έρευνα της επικεντρώνεται σήμερα στην καταστροφή γονιδίων, πλασμιδίων και ενδο-εξωκυτταρικού DNA, με στόχο τη μη διοχέτευση ανθεκτικότητας στην αντιβίωση στο περιβάλλον για την προστασία της ανθρώπινης υγείας. Γενικότερα, οι ερευνητικές δραστηριότητες της επικεντρώνονται στα ακόλουθα: (α) την ανάπτυξη και εφαρμογή προηγμένων χρωματογραφικών μεθόδων για την ταυτοποίηση των μικρορύπων και των προϊόντων μετασχηματισμού τους σε διάφορες περιβαλλοντικές μήτρες, (β) την εκτίμηση της πιθανής βιολογικής τους δραστικότητας μέσω της εφαρμογής βιολογικών δοκιμών (π.χ. τοξικότητα, οιστρογονικότητα, μεταλλαξι(ο)γονικότητα), (γ) τον σχεδιασμό, ανάπτυξη και εφαρμογή προηγμένων τεχνολογιών επεξεργασίας για τη διάσπαση των προαναφερθέντων μικρορύπων, συμπεριλαμβανομένων και των ανθεκτικών στα αντιβιοτικά βακτηρίων και γονιδίων από τα αστικά λύματα και (δ) την αξιολόγηση της μεταφοράς αυτών των μικρορύπων στο έδαφος και της πιθανής πρόσληψης τους από φυτά και καρπούς που αρδεύονται με επεξεργασμένα αστικά λύματα.

Profile Information

Despo Fatta-Kassinos is a Professor of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. She served as the founding director of Nireas International Water Research Center at the University of Cyprus until 2022. She holds a Diploma in Chemical Engineering from National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), an M.Sc. in Environmental Management and Education from the European Association of Environmental Management and Education and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from NTUA. Up to now she has participated in more than 80 research projects. Since 2003, she has attracted ca. 13 million € as project coordinator/principal investigator. She was the Coordinator of the H2020-MSCA-ITN-2015/675530/ANSWER project (2015-2019) and the Chair of the COST Action NEREUS ES1403 (2014-2018). She is the Chair of the Advisory Board of the African Center of Excellence in Water and Environment Research, while she served as the leader of the WG5 'Wastewater reuse' of NORMAN Association from its creation until 2019. She is a founding member of the International Ph.D. School on Advanced Oxidation Processes and member of its Scientific and Management Committee. She has also served as the Chair of the Scientific and Technological Advisory Board of the European JPI 'Water Challenges for a Changing World' (2015-2019). Her publication record includes 181 papers in refereed journals, 3 environmental books (co-editor), various book chapters, and more than 204 presentations at international conferences. She has 26957 citations and an h-index of 76 (Google Scholar). She received the 2012 “Nikos Symeonides” national research award by the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation for her work on wastewater treatment and xenobiotics and she is a Highly Cited Researcher 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 (ranked in the top 1% by citations). She is Executive Editor of the Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering, and Editor of Water Research, Elsevier. Among other prizes, in 2012 she received the distinguished national research award by the Research and Innovation Foundation of Cyprus, while in 2022 the Noack Laboratorien Outstanding Science Career Award by The Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC).
