Πριν το διορισμό της στο Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου τον Ιανουάριο του 2019 ως λέκτορας, ήταν μεταδιδακτορική ερευνήτρια στο Max Weber Programme στο European University Institute. Έχει λάβει το διδακτορικό της από το Dickson Poon School of Law, King’s College London τον Ιούνιο του 2017. Η διατριβή της εξετάζει τις εξωεδαφικές επιπτώσεις του περιβαλλοντικού δικαίου της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης και έχει δημοσιευθεί ως μονογραφία με τον εκδοτικό οίκο Hart Publishing το 2019. Το βιβλίο ήταν ανάμεσα στα επικρατέστερα για το βραβείο 2020 SLS Peter Birks Book Prize for Outstanding Legal Scholarship.

Η Ιωάννα έχει διδάξει ως επισκέπτης λέκτορας στο King's College London μαθήματα στο δίκαιο της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης και στο δίκαιο περιβάλλοντος. Προηγουμένως, έχει εργαστεί ως Schuman trainee στην Επιτροπή Αναφορών του Ευρωπαϊκού Κοινοβουλίου στις Βρυξέλλες. Η Ιωάννα είναι κάτοχος μεταπτυχιακού στο Δίκαιο και Πολιτική Περιβάλλοντος από το University College London και προπτυχιακού στο Αγγλικό και Ευρωπαϊκό Δίκαιο από το Queen Mary University London.

Στο Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου διδάσκει μαθήματα σχετικά με το περιβαλλοντικό δίκαιο, το δίκαιο κλιματικής αλλαγής, τις θεμελιώδεις αρχές του δικαίου της ΕΕ και το διοικητικό δίκαιο της ΕΕ. Είναι υπεύθυνη για τη διαχείριση της ιστοσελίδας και των μέσων κοινωνικής δικτύωσης του Τμήματος Νομικής και συντονίζει τη σειρά ερευνητικών σεμιναρίων.

Τα ερευνητικά της ενδιαφέροντα εστιάζουν στην παγκόσμια εμβέλεια του δικαίου της ΕΕ, ιδιαίτερα στον τομέα της περιβαλλοντικής προστασίας, στην πρόσβαση στη δικαιοσύνη σε περιβαλλοντικά ζητήματα. H Ιωάννα κατέχει θέση επιμελήτριας της ενότητας 'Review Articles' στο επιστημονικό περιοδικό Journal of Environmental Law (Oxford University Press).

Η Ιωάννα έχει επεκτείνει την έρευνά της σχετικά με την ΕΕ ως παγκόσμια ρυθμιστική αρχή, διερευνώντας τις νέες πηγές και σκοπούς χρηματοδότησης της ΕΕ στο πλαίσιο του νέου προϋπολογισμού της ΕΕ και του πακέτου ανάκαμψης από την COVID-19. Συγκεκριμένα εστιάζει στα νέα περιβαλλοντικά μέτρα που αποσκοπούν στην υλοποίηση της Ευρωπαϊκής Πράσινης Συμφωνίας και στην ενίσχυση των ίδιων πόρων της ΕΕ, όπως όπως η εθνική συνεισφορά για απορρίμματα πλαστικών συσκευασιών που δεν ανακυκλώνονται και η καθιέρωση ενός μηχανισμού συνοριακής προσαρμογής άνθρακα. Σε αυτό το πλαίσιο, έχει πρόσφατα παραδώσει εξειδικευμένο μάθημα με θέμα «Νέοι Σκοποί και Πηγές Χρηματοδότησης της ΕΕ» στο Ευρωπαϊκό Πανεπιστημιακό Ινστιτούτο Φλωρεντίας στο πλαίσιο του θερινού σχολείου της Ακαδημίας Ευρωπαϊκού Δικαίου.

Ως προς το ευρύτερο κοινωνικό της έργο, η Ιωάννα συμμετείχε στην παροχή εκπαιδευτικών σεμιναρίων σχετικά με το περιβαλλοντικό δίκαιο στα ελληνικά σε δικαστές ως μέρος της σειράς σεμιναρίων της Ακαδημίας Ευρωπαϊκού Δικαίου και σεμινάρια ανάπτυξης ικανοτήτων σχετικά με την πρόσβαση στη δικαιοσύνη σε περιβαλλοντικά θέματα σε τοπικές περιβαλλοντικές ΜΚΟ στην Κύπρο συνεργασία με το WWF-Greece. Έχει επίσης συμμετάσχει σε συμβουλευτικές δραστηριότητες ως εθνικός εμπειρογνώμονας στην Κύπρο για μελέτες που έχουν ανατεθεί από την Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή σε θέματα όπως η πρόσβαση στη δικαιοσύνη σε περιβαλλοντικά θέματα και ο έλεγχος συμμόρφωσης της κυπριακής νομοθεσίας με τις περιβαλλοντικές οδηγίες της ΕΕ.

Profile Information

Profile	Ioanna Hadjiyianni is a Lecturer at the Department of Law, University of Cyprus. Before joining UCY in January 2019, she was a Max Weber Postdoctoral Fellow at the European University Institute. She received her PhD from the Dickson Poon School of Law, King’s College London in June 2017. Her thesis investigates the extraterritorial reach of EU environmental law and has been published as a monograph with Hart Publishing in 2019. The monograph was shortlisted for the ‘2020 SLS Peter Birks Book Prize for Outstanding Legal Scholarship’. She has taught EU Law and Environmental Law at King’s College London as a visiting lecturer. Prior to joining King’s, she was a Schuman trainee at the Committee on Petitions at the European Parliament in Brussels. Ioanna holds a Master of Laws (LLM) in Environmental Law and Policy from University College London and an LLB in English and European Law from Queen Mary University of London. At the University of Cyprus, she has been teaching courses relating to environmental law, climate change law, the fundamental principles of EU law, and EU administrative law. She is managing the Department of Law's website and social media accounts and coordinates the research seminar series. Ioanna joined the Editorial Board of the Journal of Environmental Law (Oxford University Press) as Editor for the Review Articles' Section in December 2020. Ioanna’s principal research interests concern the extraterritorial reach of EU environmental law through unilateral trade-related environmental and climate change regulation and issues of access to justice in environmental matters. She is particularly interested in the legitimacy of the EU’s action in extending the scope of application of its domestic measures to third countries that do not usually have a say in the formulation and application of EU measures as explored in her monograph The EU as a Global Regulator for Environmental Protection: A Legitimacy Perspective. Within this context, she is currently exploring the specific case study of ship recycling regulation. Ioanna is expanding her research on the EU as a global regulator by exploring new sources and purposes in the EU's new budget and recovery fund, including both environmental measures such as the plastic levy and the introduction of a carbon border adjustment mechanism, as well as non-environmental measures such as the digital levy. In this context, she will be delivering the Specialized Course on the topic of 'New Purposes and Sources of EU Funding' at the European University Institute Academy of European Law Summer Course on the Law of the European Union in the summer of 2021. In broader societal engagement, Ioanna has been involved in delivering training seminars on environmental law in Greek to judges as part of the seminar series of the Academy of European Law and capacity building seminars on access to justice in environmental matters to local environmental NGOs in Cyprus in cooperation with WWF-Greece. She has also been involved in consulting activities as a national expert in Cyprus for studies commissioned by the European Commission on issues including access to justice in environmental matters and conformity checking of Cypriot legislation with EU environmental directives.
Research Interests	The EU as a Global Actor Environmental and Climate Change Law Law of the European Union: constitutional, administrative, external relations. International Environmental Law Law of the World Trade Organization Supervision Interests Κeen to supervise students at undergraduate and postgraduate level (LLM and PhD) in environmental law including climate change law, and in EU law more generally, especially external relations aspects and its inter-relationship with international law.
